CODE OF ETHICS

The Mastiff Club of Colorado (MCOC) requires its members to adhere to the following guidelines which constitute its Code of Ethics. The club also requires that members, breeders, and stud owners not aid or abet the violation of this code of ethics by anyone else.

  1. I will consider only the betterment of the breed when allowing a mating of Mastiffs, being conscious of controlling and eliminating inherited problems by testing for genetic disorders known to Mastiffs. A breeder shall plan each breeding with the paramount intention of protecting the breed; and only when he/she is in a position to give proper care to both the bitch and offspring.
  2. I will not allow a bitch to be bred prior to her twenty-second (22) month, Nor shall any bitch be bred after her seventh (7th) birthday. A bitch will not be bred more than once per year unless she does not whelp a litter, the litter is still-born, consists of a single pup or as part of a Veterinarian’s recommendation for treatment of pyometra; any other reason for a bitch to be bred more than once per year will need to be stated in writing, along with a licensed Veterinarian’s certification of good health to be received by the club’s secretary at least thirty (30) days prior to the mating for the Board’s approval.
  3. My Kennel may produce up to four (4) litters in a one-year period. These four (4) include litters produced by co-owned bitches & litters that bear my kennel name. I / My kennel will file a written “Litter Notification” with the MCOC Secretary for every litter produced.
  4. I will not knowingly allow my stud dog to be used in a breeding with someone who has already bred four (4) litters in one year.
  5. I will keep a five (5) generation pedigree on each litter of Mastiff puppies I breed.
  6. I will sell a Mastiff only to a buyer whom I believe to be interested in the betterment of the breed, or whose interest would not be inconsistent herewith.
  7. I will not knowingly sell or provide a Mastiff for re-sale, or to a pet shop, a broker or agent for sale, gift or prize.
  8. I will furnish a signed registration or transfer with each Mastiff I sell, unless written agreement is made with the buyer.
  9. Except for unusual circumstances, I will not sell a puppy less the eight (8) weeks of age. I will not ship a puppy less than eight (8) weeks of age.
  10. I will require the neutering/spaying of any puppy/adult I place or sell as “pet” quality as soon as the dog reaches the age agreed upon by all parties involved.
  11. If I should find myself unable to physically take back a Mastiff, bred/sold by me, who has been displaced, I will assist Mastiff Club of America (MCOA) Rescue or a Regional Club Rescue Program in the placement of said Mastiff.
  12. I will furnish the buyer with complete instructions for the care of each Mastiff I sell. I will supply a record of inoculations and worming with a Veterinarian’s recommended schedule for continuation.
  13. I will advise the buyer of each puppy to have a Veterinarian’s check-up within three (3) working days of the sale, to determine that the puppy is healthy. If the Veterinarian determines that the puppy is not in good health, I will, upon the puppies return, refund the purchase price or replace the puppy.
  14. I will show good sportsmanship at all times and in all matters relating to mastiffs. I will maintain the highest degree of honesty and integrity of my Mastiffs, or the Mastiffs of any other MCOC members that I might have with persons not qualified to judge the facts for themselves.
  15. I will provide the highest quality care to all Mastiffs that I own, or that are in my possession, for as long as they are in my care including quality food, water, proper shelter from heat or cold; active companionship, appropriate exercise, socialization, and professional veterinary care whenever necessary. I will never abuse, nor knowingly allow abuse of these same Mastiffs.
  16. I understand that if the board of directors of the MCOC determines that there is sufficient evidence of a member having violated this code of ethics, they may suspend or expel that member.
